Sam Mangwana was born February 21, 1945 in Kinshasa (back then it was still called Léopoldville) to Angolan parents. People call him “Le Pigeon Voyageur” basically “the travelling pigeon” because the man just never stayed in one place, career-wise or literally. He got his start in the music scene back in the ’60s, singing first with Festival des Maquisards, then linking up with Tabu Ley Rochereau’s African Fiesta.
Fast forward to the late ’80s, and Mangwana teams up again with the legend himself, Franco Luambo and that reunion gave us “Toujours O.K.” (most people peg it around 1988-89). Syllart Productions put it together, and it’s just a perfect pairing: Mangwana’s smooth-as-butter voice over Franco’s killer guitar work, with the whole TPOK Jazz crew backing them up. It wasn’t just a hit song it was the moment that locked in Mangwana’s reputation as one of the true greats of Congolese rumba, known and loved across Africa.
