
Tabu Ley Rochereau (born Pascal Emmanuel Sinamoyi Tabu) was a pioneering Congolese rumba and soukous singer, songwriter, and politician. Often hailed as the “Voice of Lightness,” he composed over 2,000 songs, blending African rhythms with Cuban influences, and became the first African artist to headline the Paris Olympia.
“Eswi Yo Wapi” (or “Esw Yo Wapi”) is a legendary Congolese soukous song composed by Tabu Ley Rochereau and famously performed with his protégé, Mbilia Bel, in the early 1980s. The title, which translates to “Where did it hurt you?”, became a massive pan-African hit and solidified Mbilia Bel as a transcontinental superstar
