Tabu Ley Rochereau, born Pascal-Emmanuel Sinamoyi Tabu in 1940, was a towering pioneer of African rumba and soukous music. Over a prolific career, the Congolese singer and bandleader composed over 3,000 songs, blending traditional African rhythms with Latin and Caribbean influences, cementing his legacy as one of the 20th century’s greatest African artists.
“Mokolo Nakokufa” (Lingala for “The Day I Will Die”) is one of Tabu Ley’s most memorable songs. Rooted in the rich tradition of Congolese rumba, the track reflects on mortality, legacy, and how a person will be remembered after death. Though widely associated with Tabu Ley, its origins remain a subject of discussion among music historians due to contributions from other Congolese musicians.
