Tabu Ley Rochereau (born Pascal Emmanuel Sinamoyi Tabu) was a pioneering Congolese rumba and soukous singer, songwriter, and politician. Often hailed as the “Voice of Lightness,” he composed over 2,000 songs, blending African rhythms with Cuban influences, and became the first African artist to headline the Paris Olympia.
“Maze” is one of Tabu Ley Rochereau’s most iconic tracks, giving its name to his celebrated 1982 album, Evvi Presente “Le Seigneur” Rochereau: Maze. The song features the classic Congolese rumba sound—fusing soaring brass, silky vocal harmonies, and the signature light, fast-paced guitar grooves that defined his later career. “Maze” remains a celebrated staple in the African rumba discography, often remembered for its emotional storytelling and undeniable danceability.
