Bébé Manga (born Elizabeth Bessem Ayamo Manga, November 27, 1948 – July 1, 2011) was a legendary Cameroonian Makossa singer whose powerful voice and emotional style made her one of Africa’s most celebrated music icons.
She gained international fame in 1980 with her timeless hit “Ami O” (also known as “Amio”), a soulful remake of Ebanda Manfred’s 1962 romantic song “Amie.” Bébé Manga’s version transformed the classic tune into a global Makossa anthem, earning her international recognition and helping introduce Cameroonian music to audiences worldwide.
The song’s success brought her prestigious honors, including the Maracas d’Or award from SACEM, and cemented her legacy as one of the greatest female voices in African music. “Ami O” continues to inspire artists and has been covered and reinterpreted across Africa and beyond.
