Franco was known by many nicknames, including Grand Maître, Uncle Yorgho, De mi Amor, and Luambo Makiadi ya Fuala. He remains one of Congo’s greatest and most influential musicians.
He was also the founder of the legendary OK Jazz band. Later on, Mobutu—the president of Zaïre—honored Franco with the prestigious title “Grand Maître de la musique zaïroise.” After that recognition, OK Jazz became known as “Tout Puissant OK Jazz” (T.P. OK Jazz).
From the 1970s through the 1990s, T.P. OK Jazz dominated Zaïre’s music scene at its peak. The band also played a major role in bringing forward some of Africa’s most celebrated artists, including Lutumba Simaro, Sam Mangwana, and Manu Dibangu.
