Faya Tess, born Thérèse Kishila Ngoyi in 1966 in Kinshasa, DR Congo, is one of the country’s most loved rumba and soukous singers, widely known as the “Freshwater Mermaid.” She left her engineering studies to follow her passion for music, a decision that led her to join Tabu Ley Rochereau’s famous Afrisa International Band in 1986.
